”The good news is that more than 2 million copies have been sold world wide; the bad news is that I now have to live in hiding with round-the-clock bodyguards. When I leave my home, I travel in an armoured car.” This is the life of 29 year old Roberto Saviano. The author of the book ”Gomorrah: Italy’s other Mafia” about the Italian mob.

In 2006 Roberto Saviano wrote a book about his experience and criminiality that has overtaken some regions in Italy. ”I wouldn’t go back in time and unwrite the book, but I admit that there are days when I hate it – and what it has done to my life and the life of my family.” Mr. Saviano says. Because after the release of his book ”Gomorrah: Italy’s other Mafia” he became a wanted man. And it is a shame because here is the man that wanted to tell the whole world about the mob, and try to make a difference. But now the only way for him to communicate with anybody is through the phone and the only company he has is his bodyguards that guard him at the unknown hiding place.

The two most dangerous Italian criminal organisations are the Campania Camorra and the Calabria ‘ndrangheta. Roberto Saviano saw his first murder when he was 13 and was on his way to school and he says that by his count 3,6000 people has been murdered by the Camorra since his birth 29 years ago. His family lived in Casal di Principe, a town of about 20,000 people. And it was an area ruled by the Camorra.
“My father was a doctor, and he was once called to the scene of a Camorra shooting and he made the mistake of taking an 18-year-old victim to the hospital. One of the “unwritten rules” of life under the Camorra is that doctors is supposed to give the Camorra hitmen a chance to come back and “finish off their victims” if they didn’t die immediately. That night the thugs visited my father and beat him so badly that he didn’t show his face in public for a long time” Mr. Saviano says.

It is the way that Camorra has been able to infiltrate Italy’s political institutions that have made it so hard to fight them. And since nobody asks too many questions, then nothing will be done.
And Mr. Saviano hope that he will not be the only one to take a stand against the Camorra.
“It is a great burden, because if I am the only one doing it then it become routine. I’m just that guy who always rants about the Camorra, and that cannot be” Mr. Saviano says.
He also says that he feels great sadness that so many people in his region only have two choices to chose from: “They leave their homeland or they become blind, turning the other cheek.”

But he hopes that it will turn around and that more people will see the third choice. To stand up against the Camorra.  And maybe then, he can come out of hiding.
